IELTS – Module 1 Listening

When you pursue your higher studies in a university or a college or migrate to an English speaking country, you have to be involved in various types of social interactions. Undoubtedly, the success of these to a larger extent will depend on how well you communicate in English. The IELTS listening module is designed to reflect some of these real-world listening situations. This is because listening comprehension is also an integral part of effective communication.

The level of difficulty increases through the paper and there is a range of topics and tasks which test your comprehension skills. For instance you will have to listen for specific information, listen for details, understand the gist of a talk or understand the opinions expressed by university lecturer on a given topic. When considering above facts, you should understand that IELTS listening test helps you to improve your overall listening strategies.

NATURE OF THE TEST

There are 40 questions asked, chosen from a multiple choice: matching, plan, map, diagram, labeling, form completion, table completion, note completion, flow-chart completion, summary completion, sentence completion, short answer questions.

The test consists of four recorded sections, each covering a different type of language and context:

The test is divided into four sections. Each section consists of  10 questions which makes 40 questions in total.

You are given a question booklet on which the questions are printed and you write answers simultaneously while the tape is going on.

Certain time will be given to students to look at the questions before the listening starts and check your work/answers at the end of each section.

SECTION 01 Approximately 4 minutes   10 questions
This is usually between two people on general everyday topic, in two parts. First you will hear an example, where you will listen to the correct answer. Then the recording is played.  The approximate duration of this part is about 4-5 minutes.
SECTION 02 Approximately 4 minutes   10 questions
This is usually a monologue on a social or general theme. There will be no example given and you get around 45 seconds to look at questions. The approximate duration of this part is about 4-5 minutes.
SECTION 03 Approximately 4 minutes   10 questions
In this section you will listen to a conversation between two to four people. This is usually based on an educational or training context.
SECTION 04   Approximately 4-5 minutes   10 questions
Section 04 is a talk or lecture on a theme of academic interest.

SKILLS ASSESSSED

A wide range of skills is assessed, including understanding of main ideas, specific factual information; recognizing opinions, attitudes and purpose of speaker: and following the development of an argument.

BAND SCORE CALCULATION

The listening like the reading component is weighed. The standard is same on each day. However, to reach a specific band, the number of correct answers required may be different in each exam.

MARKING

Each correct answer receives 1 mark. Score out of 40 are converted to the IELTS 9 band scale.

Scores are reported in whole and half bands.
